American Idol Surprise Engagement Ring

If you watched the American Idol finale, you got an unexpected bonus: Ace Young proposed to fellow ‘Idol’ alum Diana DeGarmo:

“We have conquered Broadway together. We have created our new music together. We have an amazing group of people around us. And with the help of David Webb jewelry I have a way to make this last forever. Are you ready?” Young said, before dropping down to one knee.

I’ll refrain from comment on the proposal (and jeweler name-dropping) since I haven’t seen it. I do find it sweet that Young made a mental note of DeGarmo’s preference for yellow gold, and her love of sunflowers (hence the yellow diamond). See a close-up of the ring here.

And just for fun, here’s a yellow diamond ring that the rest of us can buy readymade. The setting is more ornate than the one on DeGarmo’s sleek, simple ring – but I like it.

Wedding Jewelry Wednesday: Russian Wedding Rings

You may find them called “Russian wedding rings,” “trinity rings,” “rolling rings,” or “triple roll rings.” No matter what name you use, these three interlocking rings are a pretty choice for a wedding or anniversary ring.

The sources that I can find are inconsistent about the origins of these rings – and the meanings of the three bands. Some say they represent the Trinity, some indicate that they represent faith, hope, and love, still others say they represent strength, spirit, and love. To me, it seems like a great opportunity to pick the meaning that’s the most personal for you – or to give them your own meaning.

Six Picks: Bicycle Baubles

It’s summer(ish), and that means you’ll find me doing at least one of these two things every weekend: yard work (meh) and cycling. I would definitely still consider myself to be a novice on the bicycle, but I really enjoy it and feel so blessed to have GORGEOUS trail options that are available nearby. Exhibit A:

That doesn’t even capture the sight of creeks running through the trees, the sounds of birds, the smell of leaves. Sigh. It’s love.

Since I’ve had bikes on the brain lately, I decided to use them as inspiration for a six picks post. Here are a few of my favorite bicycle-inspired jewelry pieces.

1.

Bicycle Wish Bracelet, pier7craft on Etsy.com

This bracelet is so cute – and affordable! I’ve been a sucker for aqua/turquoise lately, and it’s everywhere! Plus, I’ve been wearing a vintage-looking cord bracelet almost nonstop lately. It might be time to add to my collection…

2.

Recycled Bicycle Bracelet, Re-Cycled Accessories

The bracelet above isn’t inspired by bicycles – it’s made from them! The company that sells it makes several pieces from recycled bike parts. Stylish and green.

3.

Red Plated Vintage Bicycle Necklace, zazastory on Etsy.com

This necklace is more whimsical than the jewelry I usually wear, but it’s so fun that I think it’s worth stepping outside the comfort zone. The bike has moving parts, and the cheerful red color is so charmingly nostalgic.

4.

Marianne’s CZ Bicycle Earrings, Emitations

On the other end of the spectrum, these stud earrings are a subtle tribute to this mode of transportation. It’s hard to go wrong with CZ studs in a slightly abstract bicycle shape.

5.

Titanium Bicycle Ring, Titanium Buzz

A durable titanium ring is appropriate for rugged cyclist types. (Like me – ha!) In any case, I think the tire tread marks and water bottle, among other motifs, are fun touches.

6.

“i love bicycles” Handpainted Wooden Bracelet, Aramar on Etsy.com

Everything about this bracelet is sunny, from the color to the handpainted bicycle motif. Too bad a front basket would look funny on my bicycle. Or would it?

Lady Gaga Engaged?

Celebrity photographer Terry Richardson posted a photo of singer Lady Gaga wearing a ring that he claims is her engagement ring. Is it real, or just a silly photo for friends?

I was almost too distracted by her bold gold-toned jewelry to notice. (I actually kind of love the necklace in a way.) If it is an engagement ring, score another one for yellow gold making a comeback.

As of now, Gaga herself is silent on the issue.

Wedding Jewelry Wednesday: A Touch of Gold

While doing some blog browsing, I came across a fabulous Portland wedding on Style Me Pretty. The bride, Julie, is wearing a very pretty gold-toned filigree necklace. It’s a nice change of pace from the sea of silver that still dominates wedding jewelry.

It takes on even more meaning when Julie, in the comments, mentioned that the necklace (plus a ring) is from her mother’s jewelry collection. What a wonderful “something borrowed!”

Inspired by this bride’s choice, I rounded up a few affordable and pretty gold-toned statement necklaces:

Brass Chain Mother of Pearl Pendant Necklace, $48 (now $36), 1928
